I am noticing a resurgence of vehicles that are blue.

While I don't love blue cars, I do like to see variety in car colors.

I am quite bored with all the silver, white, black and red cars.

I appreciate that VW introduced some interesting colors.

I just wish there was way more variety on the road.

I am curious to know what other folks think about car colors.

My dream car is a classic Beetle in a robin's egg blue.

There's a little yellow car that I always spot on the highway in the mornings and it cheers me up. It's a very bright little car. I think there need to be more yellow cars.

One of the coolest cars I've ever seen was an old rustic-orange Mustang. The color really made the car.

My car is an interesting shade of sage green. In twilight it looks gray. At my office, there are three green cars (including mine), each slightly different from the next.

I remember VW had some sort of special deal (maybe 15 years ago) where they had a cople of colors not normally available, but you could special order them, or something like that (help me out, car people). These were my two favorite car colors of all time. One was a very pale baby blue, like looking into the horizon on a very clear day. The other was a pale yellow which was a pure yellow -- not a trace of orange, not a speck of green. I craved that yellow car.

I know rental car fleets tend to buy a lot of the same color cars. Maybe that is why there are so many blue ones. I don't mind the exterior color so much but blue interior shows every bit of dirt.

I remember the VW "Thing" offering to come in all sorts of colors and configurations. It was so ugly it never took off---thankfully! Hummers remind of it in a way. Equally lacking of any design sensitivity.

I also remember a certain Japanese car maker that jumped from the motorcycle business into trying to sell automobiles. The color schemes between exteriors and interiors were absolutely hideous. Blue and bright red and that sort of thing as I remember. I guess they got the message because I sometimes see Honda cars on the road now.

The automotive industry has had a bit of a tricky patch recently with regards to colour use. Until recently it relied upon VOC-based paint formulas for its coatings but has been forced to re-think due to the widespread laws concerning eleminating VOC's (Volotile Organic Compounds) and switch to water-based carriers. The upshot is that this switch has an effect on the chromatic and saturated colours many of which are hard (and costly) to achieve. This is the same across the coatings industry actually - residential paints,commercial coatings... So to offer too many different options to the consumer ends up being really costly and hard to produce. Hence, the lack of variety in some areas.
The situation has been levelling out though and manufacturers are working out how to get consistency in their coatings in the brighter colours.
PPG did however highlight that blue has recently been selected as the favourite colour by buyers for the second year in a row, with the European Manager of PPG saying, "Blue will be the new major colour area for the coming years." They also said though that some lighter blues were seeping through as alternatives to the silver, which is the most popular selling colour in the industry.
With the industry being so deflated at the moment it's pretty likely that they will stick to the safe ground for a little while longer at least.
Which is a shame.

When I first met my husband, his car was dark purple (my favorite color). I sometimes wonder if that influenced my decision to date him. :)
