The Colorful Art of Paper Sculpture

Each of the four artists featured today use paper in the most colorful ways. The meticulous nature and repetition necessary to work with paper, and create such detailed pieces, is a tribute to all the all the artists character and focus. From dissecting books and completely transforming them into something unexpected and new, to exploding (figuratively) the individual colors of a stack of construction paper, each artist gives us a new perspective on paper and color.

Ferry Staverman

Ferry Starvermen has created a colorful garden of sculptures crafted from recycled cardboard and string. Each sculpture is made with variations of the same color giving the piece a magnificent presence and depth, even more so with multiple sculptures displayed together.

Jen Stark

Jen Stark's stunning work could put a smile on any color lover's face. Stacks and stacks of colored construction paper pulled from their stationary position and exploded into kaleidoscopes of color. Her other work, which includes drawings and animation, also incorporates her dynamic color usage.

Brian Dettmer

Brain Detttmer's dissection of books creates an unexpected curiosity in anyone who sees them. Giving new meaning to not judging a book by its cover, and in this case, nor by its words, Dettmer's unique process turns the books into three dimensional collages already in the perfect frame. These incredible book sculptures are not Brian's first alterations of preexisting materials, he has also transformed maps, record albums and cassette tapes.

Old books, records, tapes, maps, and other media frequently fall into a realm that too much of today’s art occupies. Their intended role has decreased or deceased and they often exist simply as symbols of the ideas they represent rather than true conveyers of content. ... When an object's intended function is fleeting, the necessity for a new approach to its form and content arises.

Nicholas Jones

"... as much about process as it is about the form -"these books were conceived, born, loved, stored, discarded, found anew, studied, cut, folded and reborn".

Nicholas Jones is a Melbourne based sculptor who uses books and printed paper to make works which question the manner in which books are 'read'.

Books are capsules; vessels designed to hold information, borne of investigation or of personal expression. These objects are often venerated, held aloft as are amulets, as the source of reasoned knowledge, the fecund field awaiting the harvest. Sequestered away in dusty libraries, spines anticipating the eye of the beholder, these books tactility remains at arms length.
