Yeah they can... but older computers might not recognize them. Technology is improving pretty rapidly, and it wasn't all that long ago when I had to worry about if the colors we were using in a web design were using the 216 WebSafe colors... thankfully those days are over and you're free to use any of the 16 Million colors that you want.

I'm not sure I'd call it "Ultimate". These guys have NAMED every websafe color, and have a good start on some random nonwebsafe colors...like here.

The top 2 charts... 16 Named & WebSafe were looking back and the restrictions we used to have... the other several hundred were just a nice display of some colors.

"a nice display" is an understatement. i love it. it must have been hard to choose.
i was just thinking the other day about the chart that was on the old site when i started - all the colours listed with just teeny tiny chips. that's how i started making palettes! i was wondering if there's anything like that now. probably not since there are sooooooo many colours.

Actually, modern browsers also honour a list of colour names taken from the X11 colour list. This list happens to be enshrined in the SVG and CSS3 specs and provides about 150 more colours by name.
Have a look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Web-safe_color for more information.
